Before the election, there seemed to be a longer shelf life for the insane events that came with the Trump candidacy. Usually, we'd get a day or two to digest his latest assault upon our intelligence (and usually against either the Constitution or just the fabric of moral conscience). We'd shake it off, square our shoulder, looking straight ahead, determined to catch the next wild fly ball with more grace and less flinching, only to get popped side the head by his next stray ball.
Ah, the good old days.
Apparently, Americans hadn't seen anything yet. After the GOP candidate won an election that by all accounts, "just didn't make sense," the ride, we found out was just warming up.
It's been 11 months and we're hitting our stride making the time before November 2016 look like a vacation.
We now have Putin's Russia not only actively attempting but, successfully determining the outcome of America's "free" election for President who, until 2016, was always referred to as "The Leader of the Free World." Well, not so much now.
We have seen the office of the President of the United States be used, abused and tossed under the bus not only for personal monetary gain but for egotistical pleasure and self-necessity to the likes which have never been imagined, much less actually seen implemented in America before.
We have seen the supporting cast of said so-called leader delve into the underbelly of America's lowest and bleakest moments of our history only to regurgitate them back into this Century reflecting the dark sexist side of Mad Men coupled with the unbridled abuse of position of power last seen during the time of McCarthyism.
While politics is not a "pretty business" we have all been reminded how truly ugly and ruthless white, power-hungry men appear and how frightening it is to realize that still so many of those men exist in 2017.
The GOP is doing nothing to stop the insanity of an unhinged, man-child with little to no regard for America's Constitution, her Bill of Rights nor the protocol for the unique bi-partisan tug-of-war we have witnessed as the status quo of politicking in DC.
Yes, we all knew Washington wasn't perfect but, there used to be the appearance of a somewhat reverent half-ass admiration for the maneuvers between the parties, by the parties. A cocked head, raised eyebrow and nod of appreciation of a policy well played by the other guys.
Now all pretense of Congress having the camaraderie of being Americans, thrown together by a unique election process to better America and her people does not appear to exist. The GOP has openly declared war not only against America's political foundation but the American people.
Actually, the scrimmage by the GOP started before the 2016 election. Months, if not years, before that election it appears many "God-fearing, Gun-loving, Abortion-hating, Race-mongering, Gay-bashing" homophobic Republicans had been hanging out with the Commies. I remember when that was considered a treasonous act with and of itself.
Oh yeah, that was treasonous until November 6, 2016. Odd how that love/hate Russia thing changed just in time for a GOP "win". Almost like, ah, it was planned or something. Strange.
Then there was THAT question. THE question. The MOST ridiculous question. The beat-the-horse-its-still-alive, god-please-kill-me-now-about-the-damn-server, question: Commies or Emails? (do we really have to ask that question after the Cold War & such?) We all know if two men had been running that would have not been THE determining question of character.
America has caught a glimpse of itself in the mirror of reality, it's reflection being held up for all to witness and see.
The reflection of the present soul of America isn't pretty to look at. It's harsh, alarming and down right scary.
We're not respected nor admired as we once were among World leaders. We are pitied.
